Students’ Unions working hard to encourage students to vote in the General Election

Earlier this month, first-time voters at Grwp Llandrillo-Menai in North Wales were being encouraged to vote in the General Election on 7 May through the Rock your Vote initiative.

Grwp Llandrillo-Menai Students’ Union was one of only five Students’ Unions across the UK awarded £10,000 by the Cabinet Office through an NUS competition to run activities raising awareness of the General Election.

Students’ Union officers there organised for live bands and promotional photo booths to run alongside electoral staff from the local authority speaking to students about the General Election and Students’ Union officers helping students to register to vote. Hundreds of students across nine of the group’s campuses registered to vote thanks to event.

In Cardiff University Students’ Union, over 500 students were given the chance to quiz seven high-profile politicians from different parties at The Big Debate.

The Big Debate was the culmination of the Students’ Union’s nine-month campaign in the run-up to the General Election. The debate saw Catrin Haf Jones of S4C’s Hacio hosting Lib Dem AM Aled Roberts, Ukip’s candidate in Caerphilly Sam Gould, the Leader of the Wales Green Party Pippa Bartolotti, the Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Owen Smith, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies, Chair of Plaid Cymru Dafydd Trystan, and the TUSC candidate in Cardiff South and Penarth Ross Saunders, in the Students’ Union’s Great Hall.

Cardiff University Students’ Union President Elliot Howells said:

‘The interest received from such high profile politicians just proves that our students are being acknowledged as a force to be reckoned with. The notion that young people don't care about the upcoming election is just not true and I am continuously encouraged by the political engagement I have seen from our student body.’

If your Students’ Union is hosting activities in the final few days before the General Election, or Get Out The Vote activities on polling day, we want you to let us know! Get in touch with us at office@nus-wales.org.uk.
