SUEI Awards

On Wednesday 7 December 2011, ten students’ unions received SUEI awards for displaying continuous improvement to the services and activities they deliver to their members.

NUS Vice President for Union Development Ed Marsh said: “I would like to congratulate all of the unions who have received awards today. They have shown how committed they are to making a real difference to the lives of their members.”

Please follow the links below for more information on each of the winners:

The University of Leicester Students' Union
Bronze – SUEI 1

University of Leicester Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Ian Bruce, said:

“SUEI has helped enormously to focus staff and officers’ minds on what students want and on recording the good things we already do.

‘Last year was a difficult year. The way staff and officers pulled together for the audit was a source of pride. We’ve remembered why we’re doing it.”

University of Sussex Students' Union
Bronze – SUEI 1

University of Sussex Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Jo Walters, said:

“SUEI has given us a framework to develop and improve what we do for our students.

‘I feel very proud when I think about how far we’ve come and the things we’re able to do now.”

University of Plymouth Students' Union
Bronze – SUEI 1

University of Plymouth Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Gina Connelly, said:

“SUEI gave us a thorough audit, which enabled us to work out the gaps in what we do. It made us focus more on what our members want, not what we think they want.

‘I’m particularly proud of how we’ve addressed the needs of underrepresented students – for example, we opened an alcohol-free coffee shop, which is more accessible to student parents and disabled students than a traditional student bar.”

Sheffield Hallam University Students’ Union
Bronze – SUEI 1

Sheffield Hallam University Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Kellie McLoughlin, said:

“SUEI has refocused us on what we should be there for – working with students and responding to what they want.

‘I’m particularly proud of our campaign to make our officers more well-known around campus. We gave them a professional photo shoot, and created a mural with the pictures – it started the year well for the officers and gave them a visual presence on campus.”

University of Ulster Students’ Union
Bronze – SUEI 1

University of Ulster Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Avril Honan, said:

“SUEI gave us a framework to focus on areas we needed to improve, and the backup and impetus to follow these improvements through.

‘We changed everything about our membership engagement – our new governance system and new staff members changed our focus from just commercial services to better engagement and accountability.”

Union of UEA Students
Bronze – SUEI 1

Union of UEA Students received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 1. Their project manager, Toby Cunningham, said:

“SUEI has made us connect all our different departments together as one, and has helped us to become more focussed on how we deliver for our members.

‘The process has helped us to get our governance structure more robust. We brought ordinary staff members onto the SUEI steering group, so they had a say in how the governance of the union should work. The way staff and officers have worked together in our new office environment is something I’m very proud of.”

University of Essex Students’ Union
Bronze – SUEI 2

University of Essex Students’ Union received the Bronze Award for SUEI Stage 2.

SUEI has given Essex a roadmap to build on past successes and, more importantly, to drive officers, staff and volunteers to achieve our strategic goals in all aspects of the membership student experience, across all our diverse campuses.

We are proud of the fact that we have championed SUEI and still believe in the process and look forward to working with NUS to develop the model further in the coming year.

Leeds University Union
Gold – SUEI 2

Leeds University Union received the Gold Award for SUEI Stage 2. Their project manager, Antonia Frezza, said:

“SUEI has enabled us to focus on what our members want.

‘I’m very proud of the way in which our new vision has enabled every member of staff to see how they contribute. Whether they are a member of events staff or a cleaner, they can see that they are playing a part.”

University of Bath Students' Union
Gold – SUEI 2

University of Bath Students’ Union received the Gold Award for SUEI Stage 2. Their project manager, Mandy Wilson-Garner, said:

“SUEI has sharpened our focus on our members. Student engagement is at the heart of everything we do, so that we can say with conviction that we are the student voice, representing students at Bath on issues, academic and non-academic, that they think are important.

‘In particular, I’m very proud of the way that we’ve sharpened our focus on engaging with our students. I’m also very proud of our new Student Centre.”

Hull University Union
Gold – SUEI 2

Hull University Union received the Gold Award for SUEI Stage 2. Their project manager, Julie Watson, sadly passed away this year, but Aidan Mersh, the union’s president, collected her individual award on her behalf. Of the project, Aidan said:

“SUEI has taken our union from a middle-of-the-road union that was very dependent on the quality of its officers, to one with a culture of excellence which is sustainable.

‘I’m particularly proud that our SUEI report said that we had the highest number of hours spent by officers engaging with members.”
