Officer Development

Small and Specialist Students' Unions

This course has been developed for officers of HE Small and Specialist students' unions. It aims to give these officers the key skills and knowledge to succeed during their year in office.
 
For the purpose of this course, NUS has defined a small and specialist union as the following:
  •  Annual turnover: less than £10,000 in FE unions and £100,000 in HE unions
  • Less than 10,000 students
  • Less than 10 staff and officers combined
  • The partner institution offers specialist course
  • The union is not planning on attending Lead and Change or FE leadership as the course content will cross over
 

Who is it for:

All officers from HE affiliated small and/or specialist students' unions

 
Learning outcomes:
  • Explore why you stood for the role of officer, reflecting on your manifesto and goals for the year; as well as the skills needed to succeed
  • Explore the concept of 'partnership' for their union and institution
  • Describe what issues need to change for a better student experence and how to lead this change
  • Demonstrate an understanding of community organising techniques to apply in a students' union context
  • An unrivalled opportunity to creat a support network with other officer from similar unions
  • Attend interactive workshops to gain practical skills to apply in your role
